Airtel GPRS Settings for Lumia 800

Airtel Customer Support and their Technical Support recommend that you use airtelgprs.com as the APN for the new windows mobile phones from Nokia. However if you use the above APN on the Lumia 800 you will not be able to access the internet / download mails - pretty much do anything with your data plan. Simple solution is to not punch in an APN on the Lumia 800 and it works like a charm with the latest updates. The Lumia 710 however needs the use of the APN to access the internet.

Uttar Pradesh. One town a day.

The joy of returning to Delhi was short lived. Or make that not lived. :-(

Spent the weekend looking for a paying guest accommodation, as the ones i had contacted from paradeep were real opportunists, who realised that they had desperate customers who needed a place, and quick. The fact that it was only for a month added to their demands. 15 days rent as commission, for a months lease, to double rent, were the offers i was forced to reject, and the search began anew at the various property websites.

Finding a paying guest accomodation or for that matter, any accommodation is made easy by 99acres.com etc. :-)

A refined search resulted in a few more leads, one of which though far from ideal was acceptable, clean and inexpensive. :-)

Moved in on sunday, and reported to work on monday, to be informed that i will be travelling all of UP with the team undertaking trade promotion activities. The schedule read, muzzafarnagar, saharanpur, moradabad, lucknow, barreilley, agra and mainpuri, all to be covered in eight days. The vagabond existence, means we complete a meet, pack, travel a few hours by road, sleep, wake unpack, meet, pack . . . . . And the cycle repeats.

Off to Lucknow tonight, four locations to go, before i return to spend time in the market with the sales teams.

Another week has passed, slow and steady, with not much happening in the office or otherwise. A quick trip to Bhubaneshwar, for work, was am all new experience on many fronts.

Have traveled in an unreserved compartment, with unreserved tickets, for the first time in my life!

The mba brochures and admissions pitches fail to mention this aspect of field work in the glorified images of corporate India that are sold to the millions of students. :-)

picked up a couple me books at the station, paths of glory and foreign body. Hope to read one tomorrow. Also have plans to wake up real early, and walk to the beach to observe the sun rise. The time at tifr allowed me to enjoy many a sunset, but have witnessed a sunrise only a couple of times.

Have requested rashmi to post her 2 bits here, and she has accepted to do so. Post time. :-)

When i got to know that i will be spending a month in orissa, i had decided that weekends will not be spent in the guest house, but travelling. I wanted to visit all the tourist destinations here before i am done with the plant stint. Unfortunately the plant works six day weeks, so the only free day is sunday.

This sunday, vinit and i visited the nandankanan zoo. The zoo boasts of the largest population of white tigers in the country, and also a lion and white tiger safari. The zoo is great but maintenance could have been a lot better. Will write a guide to Puri, Konark, Paradeep and Nandankanan when i get a decent net connection, and do not have to type on my phone. Photos of these places also need to be uploaded.

The safari is overrated, and the tigers and lions are usually asleep at "pre designated" locations even is early as 10am. The temperature levels make most animals prefer the shade of their enclosures to roaming out in the open.

Personally i prefered the hyderabad zoo, where sameer and i incidently got to feed the tigers. Something i will never forget. :-)

Got my first salary from the new job. It feels great to receive a nice cheque. :-)

retail therapy time? Perhaps when i return to delhi. Any recommendations?

Work as usual, tickets to return to gurgaon are nearly done, and i should be there on use 15th. As gurgaon is my reporting office, i will need to make arrangements 4 my accomodation, so if any one knows a pg or place available for rent for a month, please contact me.

Reading, winning by jack welch. Nice read. :-)recommended to all who work, or lead teams etc.

Listening to an assortment of The Who, the dorrs, metallica and pink floyd. :-)

watching season four of house. Fantastic.

Done with all the five seasons of the black adder.seasons one to four are Rowan Atkinson's best. By far. Relived the good old days when i used to watch this on star plus. 1992 i think it was.

A good net connection should see me upload a bunch of pics to my web album.

Labour Day Holiday

Vinit, Kurvan and I borrowed bikes from a couple of colleagues and drove to the "Nehru Bungalow", and the estuary of the Mahanadi. The drive was pleasant, and the view spell binding.

Walked or rather waded across the knee deep river to the other side, and spent some time there before returning to gd4. Uploading images on my gprs connection is painfully slow, will do it once i get a decent connection. Rested for the rest of the day.

Labour Day holiday well spent. :-)

Paradeep. 15 days down.

It has been an eventful fortnight since my last post, and the fact that i am using my phone and mail to post this is largely due to a complete lack of a reliable net connection in paradeep.

The 36 hour train journey was... to be generous, boring. slept the entire time, waking up for refreshments in the form of cold, muddy water, that is called tea by the railways. The food in the train was a prelude to the food at paradeep, but we were blissfully unaware.

Were shocked to be put up in a dilapidated building, but were shifted later in the day to the actual guest house. Paradeep as a port, faces a real shortage of clean houses, and i was surprised to learn that rents here are higher than what one would pay in pune for a much larger apartment. 5k+ for a dilapidated apartment, constructed nearly 20 years ago, without proper sanitation is the norm here. Shocked. :-(

as mentioned earlier the food in paradeep, right from restaraunts to the cafe, is in one word, again being generous, horrible. The food in the college cafeteria which we avoided like the plague now seems like nectar, sweet delicious nectar.

Brinjals and potatoes (unpeeled) are the only ingredient that can be identified, and the less said about the taste, or the rotis for that matter the better. Instant noodles and lays are our constant meal supplements.

Undertook a road trip to konark and puri last weekend. Puri was a nice though the touts left me seething.wished i had not entered the temple thanks to these quack priests who harass tourists to no end. Konark was beautiful, and our guide went to great pains to explain every carving on the magnificent temple.

The new toy, the canon a590-is is awesome, and have been pleased with the quality of results and creative satisfaction it provides.

Labor day, means i get a holiday tomorrow. :-) plan to see the sunrise and the confluence of the mahanadi with the bay of bengal.

15 more days in paradeep. The countdown has begun.

The gunners screwed up last night. Man U played well, and almunia saved the day for us.

The Past Year and Half ...

Lack of Internet connection ...
Lack of time ...
Lack of interest ...
Lack of motivation ...

Some of the reasons for abandoning the blog for the better part of two years, though the last two points are the prime reasons. I hope to get back to blogging a fair bit from now on ...

It has been more than a year since this page, i.e. the post creator has been visited by me. In the meanwhile, I have completed my MBA, have secured a dream job at an MNC, worked for the college on many things, some of which were awesome, the others dreary, but on the whole the past year and half has been great! And in the mean while I have also spent two glorious months, enjoying every minute of my summer internship with the same MNC that I have now joined for my final placement.

The time has also seen me make a few great friends, of whom I will post some details at a later date.

The offer was mine in December, and since there was not much happening in college in the intervening period, I spent a lot of time with Rashmi and at home. The internet connection at home was abused ... so was the connection at Rashmi's place. The outcome of this abuse, should keep me entertained for the coming months.

Induction ... has been more of one gourmet meal after another at the company guest house. How the four of us can eat such a whole lot is going to have some of the officials perplexed. The staff at the guest house have to work overtime to keep the four of us fed, to the extent that the day before, the room service guys had to offer us only a "1/2 rice" as we had collectively exhausted all the rice that was prepared that day!

A trip to Connaught Place, Janpath, India Gate, New Friends Colony etc. had me seeing more of Delhi in one evening, than I have during my summers, where I spent more than 2 months here. Travelling in Delhi is fairly easy, provided you know the bus number, route and destination, which the three of us (Vinit, Georgey and I) were completely clueless about, but had Manoj to thank for.

A visit to the Ambiance Mall to meet a couple of the friends that I spoke about earlier, had us in splits, as we recalled some of the fun moments from college. The time-pass in the bumping cars was FUN! We need to do such things more often....

The next three months have been decided for me by the company, and I shall start off by spending one month at Paradeep, Gurgaon and Pune respectively. I shall be trained in Plant Operations, Sales and Marketing, Trading and Supply Chain in this period. Since I have been paired with Vinit a classmate of mine, the time should be enjoyable as well as interesting.

Oh, in the meanwhile have purchased a couple of toys that should get reviewed here in the next few days. A stable internet connection is something that I need to look for !

Have a thirty hour train journey for the next couple of days. Should be more than enough time to finish the book and the new Sam Bourne.

Semester II Begins.

In a couple of days that is.

Exams were a breeze. They tend to be when you don't know much of what is being asked. Accounts remains a nemesis.

Electives for sem II selected. Sales and Distribution Management, Operations Management II and Data Mining form my 8 elective credits in addition to the 18-odd core credits.

Admissions work now gathers steam. Prospectus to be sent out, accounts (not again) to be reconciled and matched, emails (by the hundreds) to be replied to, classes missed (on admissions duties :D) all form a part and parcel of being a part of the admissions team.

Wish you all a very happy, safe and prosperous Diwali!

Semester 1 Done. Exams to go.

Been more than 3 months in college, don’t know what new things I have learnt, but it has been an awesome experience.20 hour days never felt so satisfying.

On the academic front, I managed to do well in most courses. Accounts remain unfathomable. About half the class (me included) flunked the paper. The BComs and MComs were shocked to see 36 / 60. My first backlog paper to be written sometime next week. In fact will be writing (attempting would be more appropriate) my semester papers starting Monday.

On other fronts, admissions work takes up most of the day, as does the college website. Attendance records are dismal, with my extra curricular attendance dropping steadily from the 95% levels to dismal 60% levels.

November resolution – 1 hour of swimming / gym a day.

Got placed with Cargill (www.cargill.com) for my summer project. It should be a lot of learning.

Mom was shocked when I told her that “I was placed in Cargill”, her reply “What are you planning to do in the Indo-Pak border?”

2 and a half months down

2 months down.

Been 2 months and a few days in college and the majority are beginning to settle down to the routine. 20 hour days don’t seem as daunting, and the ingenious minds have developed methods of getting past the profs roving eye. The “was thinking” comment has now been replaced by “just a few minutes sir” and this may be replaced “just a few minutes more sir” in the coming days.

Diro is always on the look out for the “sleeping beauties” and does not spare the rod.

1st round of FCQs are done. Seem to be ok in most papers. I have started the “3 point someone” club for those with just above average grades in college. Speaking of clubs and committees, I have been made a part of the Admissions core committee, and would be responsible for the process that the next batch goes through. Should be a lot of work, a lot of travelling, with absolutely no attendance in the 2nd semester but should also be a lot of learning and a whole lot of FUN.

The website is coming out pretty nicely, and the work in getting the material updated is taking a lot more time than anticipated. The Aug 15th that the diro set seems unattainable.

Another of the deadlines that is probably not attainable is the one on the newspaper research, which the class does not seem to be interested in. May be difficult to do now.

The lappie benchmarks are pending, have not had the time to do much on the lappie but work work and more work ! Word and Excel, the hitherto untouched parts of any computer I use have been made to work overtime, and I plan to get my hands dirty with a bit of corel and photo shop too. GIMP, Paint.net and Inkscape prove to be interesting alternatives that need some attention.

Ajay and I have had fun for the past few days, challenging each other in getting moneys worth on the NOD32 investment. Awesome software for a place where every machine and every pen drive is infected with a plethora of viruses. Any pen drives that need cleaning are welcome!

Freshers party ! fun time .. watched people dance the night away. explained my two left feet and stomp ... was named "Fill_Fancy_Pirate_NameHere" as the no-nonsense guy ! :) surprised !

The past week was weird, woke up on Tuesday to find out that 5 laptops were stolen from the hostel, and the police had been called in. a search of all the rooms ensued, but the lappies are yet to be found. A massive loss to the guys, and a sense of fear (sort of) among the rest of the hostelites. Rooms that remained open throughout the night are now closed and latched. Weird to walk along the corridor at times and find not a single door open where one week ago most door would have remained open till 1 am.

A few birthdays were celebrated last month, mine was real special. Luckily it fell on a Wednesday so was free, and went home and to ras place … but the guys had a cake and a lot of bumps at midnight. Was real fun… went back to the Loyola days, though the birthday bumps were a tad less painful here.-

Signing off on this note … placements for summer projects are scheduled to start, admissions work is gearing up, website coming through .. all in all a productive month and half.

2 posts in a day !

Someone surely has some free time

Please do not inform the staff / the diro.

thought that i would post some details of the exams that I have failed since i joined the college ! The first month has been a revelation in this regard!

Firstly, my book review got cancelled. Don’t know what they found objectionable in The Motorcycle Diaries. Half the class had reviewed one night, which had the diro fuming. We get loaded with a book review, of a book chosen by him. Got ram charan’s "boards that deliver" ... slow book telling me what boards do and what they should try to do ... got a B in the review.

the foundation course papers ... less said the better. got off work one week before i reached college, so the amount of studies I could do was limited to a cursory scan of the material. Looks like that was the condition of most of the batch mates too, esp those with work ex. The papers were relatively easy, but i though that i did exceptionally terribly at Math, Stat and Behavioral Sciences. From the results declared till date, have cleared math, safely, but stat and bs still remain to haunt me.

4 FCQs, or fortnightly conducted quizes have been held in this month! these are papers on Saturday mornings, from 9 - 11. The thing about these that make them all the more interesting is that we do not know what papers are we to answer till we get to the class and how many would we have in the 2 hours. the seniors have had days when they have faced 4 fcqs in a day ! Oh .. and the fun part is the psuedo gamble that ppl take when they say that they are sure that it will be a RM paper, coz the prof let it slip that there would be an exam in the near future. Speculations run rampant, and anyone who gets concrete information on papers is the hero of the day. when you have a choise set of 18 papers, the reduction of 1 / confirmation of 1 makes life all the more easier !

this sat was all the more fun coz i woke up at 8:50 for the 9am paper ! luckily got a rickshaw from the hostel to the college ... and reached 10 minutes late ... wrote all that i could in RM, one question for 15 marks ... faffed a bit ... hope to clear the paper ..

the rm project needs to be completed ... got the exploratory research questionnaire out today. lets see what the replies hold in store for us !

A month down...

Been more than a month that i have been at the college, and what a month it has been! Am still amazed at the quality of the batch ... the strengths of the individuals is staggering!

A chronology of the month would be difficult to remember in this sleep deprived state, but the one thing that’s common to the entire batch is the feeling of sleep depravation. A normal day starts at 6 am and ends way past 2 at night... add to this the hour that you need to compulsorily spend in the gym/pool by the time you hit the sack, you are out cold.

this was taken to the limits yesterday... after 2 days of no sleep, dropped down at 12 and woke up at 11 today. Luckily there were no lectures scheduled in the 9-11 slot. the 90% attendance requirements make bunking of lectures a lucury that i cant afford!

the 3 guys with the 6 letters in the cv are awesome. Rethinking my strategy for my mba just becoz of these guys. Marketing did not sound so good before i heard prantosh speak about it!

case analysis and written analysis and communication make the first year worth it, where most of the other subjects are theory, with large pillow sized text books (sleep inducing quotient that could not be reduced by a cup of hot black coffee in some cases) these subjects put the course into perspective .. this is what we will be doing in the long run and what fun it is !

Sivaram apte speaks of an increase in productivity of using a foot mouse (trackball) for the ones who use both hands on the keyboard and feel that it is a tremendous waste of time to try to reach for the mouse ... need to try it when the lappie comes though.

speaking of the lappie, should have her in my hands by the end of the week ... and what a beaut she is ! will have a full review sometime next week ... but should perform AWESOME ! was in the committee that selected the vendor and the machine, and the final config was mine, so the machine should perform well. hope the class is happy with it when it comes through though.

Academics wise, well the less said the better. the staff have completed more than 200 pages in each of the pillow sized books, and i am yet to start off with the first page. Ironically have been scoring well in subjects that i did not study much in and less in the ones that i thought i knew. Need to get that in place... and get some serious time with the books...

stats looks scary ....

the college is to be redesigned and am doing it with Ajay and Aditya. Work on that is in progress and the new site should be a lot better and more comprehensive than the one we have now!

been planning this update for the past 2 weeks and have not had the time to do it ... lack of morning lectures made it easier to get some time.

now i need to get back to a marketing research project on the feasibility of operating a unisex salon in the campus ... lets see what the respondents say !

reading: Lance Armstrong - Its not about the bike. been reading it at the rate of 2 pages a day ! need to get back to reading a lot more ....

music: whats that ... no time !

2 Days gone. 666 to go.

So it is to be the number of the devil. As the administrator of the college went to great pains to explain, we are "Stuck" / "imprisoned" etc here for another 666 days .. plus minus a couple ...

expecting holidays is considered a crime, and the first week seems to be straight from hell ! Lectures, infact they call it non acads, Yoga, Gym etc, start at 6 am and last an hour, followed by an hour to get fresh and have breakfast .... classes start at 9, and stretch on till 6 or 8:30 pm, depending on the day ... with an hours break each for lunch and snacks.

todays induction was ok. the measurements for the uniform took the better part of the day. approximately 4 hours of wait.

tomorrow is to be the Outbound Learning trip. Should be fun. Atleast thats what has been promised to us !

Lectures start @ 9AM on monday, with a foreign language lecture !

Hostel room is nice. food acceptable. insects of varying sizes seem to like to make my room theirs, once i leave the door open ..

off for dinner !

The day is here !

It is 1:13 AM, Friday June 1, 2007. The day that I quit being unemployed, and start off on getting my MBA ! Need to pack up, and move again. seems like yesterday, that i moved away from mumbai.

The past 2 weeks have been wonderful as well as tiring. Foundation Course work on Accounts, Economics, Math, Statistics and Computers were all pretty manageable, as were the 2 interviews, book and movie review. The manufacturing unit and entrepreneur interview, done thanks to Indrajeet and the CEO thanks to Rashmi. Saved me a whole lot of work guys ! Thanks .. :)

The time that I spent with Ra in the past couple of weeks, was amazing ! Both of us know that the next couple of years, are going to be hectic, with college, lectures, assignments and submissions, and tried to make the most of the time we got.

Need to get a new laptop, been postponing it for weeks, hoping that Dell introduces the 965 in the Inspiron line, they seem to have done it for the Latitudes ... Will try for it in the college deal.

Notes on the induction and the first couple of days in college should follow ... may be some pics too !

A new begining.

The last three years seem to have flown past. Still remember the day I walked into the corridors of TIFR, as a fresh engineer, starry eyed with a prayer in my heart (hoping that I don’t screw up) as I went about designing a satellite. It was a once in a life time opportunity to meet and work with some of the best brains in the country, and a dream come true.

As I look back at the past 3 years, I realise that more than the work that I did here, it is the friendships nurtured, the random chats at the breakfast table, the late nights watching football matches and the other things that just happen here make TIFR the best place to be!

The next couple of years will be thrilling, challenging and educative but will what I learn ever compare to the things I have learnt here? Simple things for Mumbaites but harrowing nightmares to outsiders, things like getting out of locals at Dadar made simple by Sam and Nirav, boarding a moving train exercises that Tilak and Sheetal tried to get me to master, make me look back at the friendships and brings a smile to my face.

Will surely miss all this!

au re-voir ! you guys are the best !

will upload pics of the last couple of days of my vacation and the farewell party later.

Day 3 - Snorkeling at Rameshwaram.

When the guide at the Hotel offered that his brother in law could take us snorkelling, I jumped at the offer. 3 hours of fun.

Convincing mom to jump off the boat, into what she could see is chest deep water, but the fact that we were 1km from the shore ... was FUN. Getting her back into the boat after her 10 minute adventure was even more so.. ;)

Some pics. Edward our snorkeling guide was able to pick out a puffer fish and a sea cucumber, while i could get a couple of star fish.

High tides coupled with a rough water movement at the base meant that we could not see very clearly, and the fishes were missing ... but the corals were beautiful. Dad was so enchanted by it, that he has promised a underwater camera before the next trip...

Day 2 - Rameshwaram and Danushkodi

Rameshwaram and Danushkodi are two places, approximately 17 km apart in the Ramanatapuram District of Tamil Nadu. Rameshwaram is approximately 160 km from the South Indian city of Madurai.

A very important pilgrim centre for the Hindus, Rameshwaram, according to legends, is the place from where Lord Rama, built a bridge across the sea to Lanka to rescue his consort Sita, from her abductor, Ravana. This is also the place where Rama worshiped Shiva to be absolved of the sin of killing Ravana. Both the Vaishnavites and Shaivites visit this pilgrimage centre which is known as the Varanasi of the south. (from the wiki)

Dhanushkodi was a city at the southern tip of the Rameswaram island, at the eastern coast of the Tamil Nadu state of India. Dhanushkodi is situated in the South-East of Pamban, the Dhanushkodi railway line was destroyed in the 1964 cyclone from Pamban Station and a train load of passengers was washed into the sea. Even though the railway line was laid between Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi, it was in course of time covered by six sand dunes and it was abandoned.

Danushkodi is about 18 miles West of Talaimannar in Jaffna, Ceylon. Before 1964 storm there was a train service up to Danushkodi called Boat Mail from Chennai Egmore, the train linked a steamer to Ceylon. During 1964 storm a huge wave of about 20 ft came crashing on the town from Palk Bay/Strait east of the town and destroyed the whole town, a train, the pamban rail bridge etc all happened at the dead of the night. Danushkodi has the only land border between India and Ceylon which is one of the smallest in the world just 50 yards in length on a sand dune in Palk Strait.

The Government of Madras declared the town as Ghost Town and unfit for living after the storm, now a small group of fisher folk resides there. For reaching the village one has to go in a four wheel drive or in a fish cart.

Most of the city is now in ruins, and the Church, the railway station and other buildings serve as a reminder of that horrible night. (from the wiki)

Survivor
This old man spent the entire night of the cyclone out in the rain, and survived by tying himself up to the telegraph/light posts with cables. He lives to tell tales of how the British took care of them, and how the present day government promises Rs. 2 per kg of rice, but provides no basic infrastructure facilities. He is hoping for some reduction in price of cement and other essentials. He lives in a shack to the side.
The water that mom is drinking is sea water, that gets filtered through the sand, and looses all salinity. Tasted great after the 20 km ride in the jeep, most of it over sand dunes.

On the way back from Danushkodi, we halted at the spot where it is said that Ravana's brother surrendered to Rama. The temple to this event is a must see.
