My first GD/PI

31st Jan, Noon, 2yB batch.

Got to SIBM, and after registration was sent to the first floor where had to submit photocopies of Xth, XIIth and Work Ex. No Porbs if no work-ex cert, carry your appointment letter and latest pay slip.

Group 2YB was full of ppl from outside Pune, other than YT ... Sammyo Banerjee the coordinator was awesome... if you are reading this Sammyo thanks a lot dude .... you put us at ease.... It was an honest pleasure meeting you and interacting with you.

3-5 minute presentation on SIBM, carried on the Mountaineering theme from the prospectus.

Total Number of candidates is approx 100 for every slot, but divided into 7-8 groups of 12 ...

3 guys missing in my group.

10 minutes for an essay - Topic :INDIA - THE NEXT SUPER POWER - wrote some garbage about the take overs etc. thank the Tatas for taking over Corus, gave me something new to write about, and ISRO for the launch of the PSLV-C7 and the recovery of the SRE. :) Overall ok.

Moved to another room after a few minutes ... Waiting Room.

A Col. and a Lady with a PHD are responsible for the Case Studies.

diff case from the other posted till now. They have a set of approx 15 cases from what i saw... The col. shuffled through the bunches and selected one.

Sameer is a restaurant owner.

He owns this place that is in between two parallel roads. He has it divided into two parts. The two parts have a common kitchen.

The part A is a class-A restaurant, with elite class clients. Doing ok there and he has invested a lot of cash in it.

The part B is a dumb, and serves beverages and snacks.

Suddenly over a period of two months the part B becomes a college hangout. and is now considered a happening place by the collegians.

What must sameer do to maximize profits?
Good discussion, few good Points. no fish market (good job guys ) heard that some of the other teams were bad.

Next task after 5 minutes of sitting around were the group tasks. The panelists include an IIMA alumni.

Had the same that mexxian at pg.com has spoken about, the make a square and the restrainer captive task.

We made a double pentagon instead of a square...don't ask me how me managed but we did just that. The guy offered us double or quits, double the marks or zero, but did not go ahead with it even though 7 of the 9 guys in the group agreed. Few questions on the tasks to each person, including which role preferred captive or captor ?

no great shakes till now... sent for a snack, sandwiches, tea and chips.

back to the waiting room, and were sent to the PI individually.

PI.

3 guys in the panel, to the left, a sagacious old gentleman (the guy in the prospectus, to the page on the left), in the middle, the questioner, and to the right, someone who was not there till i was about to leave, but a young guy ... (again from the prospectus ... the guy on the page in the right)

background: I have 3+ years of work ex in R&D, ISRO and TIFR Mumbai. All questions were based on this, and as to why i want to leave the burgeoning field of VLSI design, pure R&D for the mundane world of Management.

spoke at length about the desires which make me want a change of career. the older gentleman seemed to support my views. the questioner had a cross question to each of my statements, but on the whole was done in 15 minutes with no other questions other than what I do for fun, and why the MBA, and why not continue on to an MS.

back to the waiting room, filled up a response sheet, and left.

OTHER PROPS visible in the Group Task room.
1. 3 bricks, all the ppl in the group are expected to stand on them at the same time.

2. a football. ?? task ??

3. the rope. make a square

4. no props for the cross line and captor/captive game.

5. lots of hand kerchiefs for blindfolds.

Overall my first exp of a GD/PI seemed to go ok. happy with my performance. the coords spoke of 1050 final selections to the gd/pi process from 21000 applicants. so looks like a 5:1 selection process.
